Whitey blew up the board with a maiden turf race last week so we will again focus today’s card on turf races.

Fund Plays for May 21st https://www.ponycapper.com/2011/05/21/fund-plays-for-may-21st/ Sat, 21 May 2011 16:22:49 +0000 https://www.ponycapper.com/?p=167 Degenerate Fund Plays for May 21st

I went back and looked at the winning formula for the Fund and it looks like Turf races have been the breadwinners. So, today, most of my focus will be on the Turf.

Go big or go home.

Pimlico

Race 3 – Here is a nice turf race that could produce some nice prices
6 – Battleground – 20-1 – Only had one turf start in his career but I think he has some sneaky turf breeding and he is the only speed in the race. Chance to wire the field at price.
11 – Rampaige – 10-1 – Sometimes when the trainer has a favorite in the race – it’s the other runner who outperforms and surprises. He has never been on the turf but he should like it as he won on sysnthetics beating a very good horse in Wilkinson, who came back to win a stake at FG. In his last two, he lost to two stakes horses, so toss those. Trainer good with first turf.

10 win 6-11
$2 exacta box 6-9-11

Race 7
3- Stormy the Cat 20-1 – Degenerate followers know that Whitey is in love with this horse. He has had some tough trips and has hidden talent. He could surprise today with a clean trip.

$15 Win and Place 3
$5 exacta box 3-10

Race 8
I am very excited about this race. 7 of the 9 horses want the lead which will set it up for a closer.
2 – Heritage Hall – 15 -1 – He is one of 2 horse who can capitalize on a speed duel. Trainer hitting at 30%. Philly park form usually travels well and the cut back to 6 furlongs improves his chances.
1 – My Cuz CJ – 20-1 – Another closer who loves the distance and is 1 for 1 at Pimlico. His last was a prep for this. Can blow up board

$15 Win 2
$10 Win 2
$2 exacta box 1-2-5

Race 10
Race 13 – Love these Maiden turfers. It’s a Whitey speciality.
6 – Schoolhouse Woods – 15- 1 – Gets Lasix for turf debut. Bred to win on turf by Sky Classic. Trainer is very underrated on turf.

$10 win 5 and 2
$2 exacta box 2-5-7

Hollywood

Race 5
1 – Tanda – 3-1 – Will play back for Fund after disappointing 2011 debut. Horse is a monster.

Degenerate Fund – April 30th https://www.ponycapper.com/2011/04/30/degenerate-fund-april-30th/ Sat, 30 Apr 2011 17:06:14 +0000 https://www.ponycapper.com/?p=151 Whitey’s Degenerate Fund Picks for 4/30
With the Kentucky Derby looming next week, we need to buffer the bankroll a little so we can take an aggressive stance next week.
The Fund’s Stable Notes have been paying dividends so far as Dooney Rock’s kept us afloat the last 2 weeks with a 29-01 2nd place finish three weeks ago and a win last week at 10-1. Dooney was a key stable entry after several troubled trips.
This week’s selection are as follows

LOCKS
Calder – Race 11
#1 Stormy the Cat – 4-1 – Followers of this blog know that Whitey has been high on this horse since he broke his maiden 3 starts ago. He came back in allowance after taking inside money and had a troubled trip. Last time tried stakes company and made a nice showing. He drops into allowance ranks where he is taking on pedestrian maiden winners for the most part. There is a Clement runner to fear (2 horse) but I like Stormy in this spot.
$40 Win 1
$8 Ex box 1-2
Churchill – Race 4
#5 Berberis – 4-1 – Why Churchill is racing under the lights tonight I have no idea. This is a nice horse and has a great angle going for him. He has won 3 times while all the other horses have only won once. He has faced some really nice horses at Oaklawn winning 2 out of 4 and has a great trainer in Asmussen. Not sure we will get 4-1 but anything above 5-2 is a gift. Only potential negative is not getting the right pace set up with a bunch of synthetic horses trying dirt for first time so its tough to say what the pace will be.
$40 win 5

Strong Plays
Finger Lakes – Race 8
#1 and #4 Midnight Abbey and She’s Got Thefever – Both 6-1 – There are 4 speed horse who will be battling up front – which will set it up for the only 2 closers in the field.
#15 win 1, $8 win 4 – 4 ex box 1-4
Delaware Park – Race 5
#8 – Summerlucky – 6-1 – Tampa Invader is dropping in class and comes out of some key races. Worth a wager.
$15 win 6

Delaware Park – Race 9
#8 Not Abroad -12-1 – big overlay on ML odds so I don’t think we will get 12-1. He is the class of the field and came in 2nd to some quality stakes runner. Only issue could be pace set up. Not a whole lot of speed in here but the class factor should be enough. Also like the 1 horse Wills Afleet. He likes Delaware and will also need it hot up front.
$10 Win 1 and 8
$20 Place 8
$5 ex box 1-8
$2 ex box 1-6-8

Tampa Race 3
#5 Runricon 8-1 – Took loads of inside money in last race where he opened up at 3-1 and went off at 25-1. Made decent showing when facing a monster Catalano runner. Now drops in class in what looks like a very weak field.
$10 win and Place

Tampa Race 10
#5 Wildcat Miss – 6-1 Whitey picked her 2 starts for the fund and she came through for us at 15-1. I’m coming back to her today as she is trying the grass for the first time for a crafty trainer. Not sure about the turf breeding but she comes out of key race where she was 2nd to a horse that came back and won a stakes.
$15 win 5
$2 ex box 1-5-8
Longshots and Spot Plays
Calder Race 4
#1 Venga Mi Nino 12-1- Faced some tough turf horses at tampa and now drops in class to the claiming ranks. 3 starts back lost to a horse by only 5 lengths and now that horse is racing in a stakes today.
$15 win 1
$5 win 7
$2 ex box 1-3-7

Delaware Park Race 3
$2 ex box 1-5-7

Delaware Park Race 4
Blow up the board ex box 4-7-12
$5 win 4,12

Churchill Race 2
#1 Canfield – 10-1 – Whitey Stable Notes special
2011 – GULf – MSW – 4-16- Zito firster ducked at start after breaking slow. Toss the race.
Now he drops in class into maiden claimer
$10 Win 1
$2 ex box 1-4-5

Churchill Race 7
#6 Chilliness – 8-1 May surprise in this spot
$10 win 6
Pimlico Race 5
#4 Whitehouse Ridge – 8-1 – Should control the pace and is 2 for 4 on turf.
$10 win 4
$2 ex box 4-7-8 (Blow up board)

Pimlico Race 9
#7 Safety Valve 15-1 – Trainer hits at 30% when entering horses first in stake
$10 Win and Place 7

Lots of longshots today – Gotta love the mudders

Tampa Bay Race 3
#2 Flatter This – 12-1 – Meets a weak field today and has back class. Needs to be Ness runner.
$15 win 2

Tampa Bay Race 6
#10 – Call me Junior -12-1 – Meets weak field – Gets bad jockey but who knows
$10 Win 10
$5 ex box 8-10

Tampa Bay Race 9
#11 – Independent George – 12-1 – Should set the pace in field with no speed. May hang on for win.
$15 win and Place 11

Hawthorne Race 9
#2 Slewzoom 10-1– Should get ideal pace set up and close off the pace to run them down. Needed last after layoff. Hawthorne played to closers yesterday and if it’s wet he will like it.
$20 Win and Place 2
$2 Exacta Box 1-2-3

Hawthorne Race 10
#2 Dooney Rock -8-1 – This is a play back from last time. We won’t get 29-1 today but still in with a big chance
$10 win 2
Blow up board ex box $2 – 2-5-7

Philly Park – Race 8
#5 Bert’s Too Kinky – 15-1 – Loves the slop – 2 for 2 – Should run a big one today off of short layoff
$10 Win and Place 5

Gulfstream- Race 9
#7 Christiesborntorun – 5-1 – Showed promise as a 2 yo and makes first start today as 3 yo. Hope he is ready.
$15 win 7

Gulfstream – Race 10
#8 More is Better -10 -1 – With the scratch of the 4 horse it looks like he is the only speed in the race and should have things his own way. Trainer hitting at 30%
$20 win and Place 8

Gulfstream – Race 11
#8 Houngun – 6-1 – Class of the field by sharp turf trainer. Faced much tougher at Monmouth last year. Layoff only concern
$15 win 8

Pimlico – Race 6

$15 Win 6

Longshots
Gulfstream -Race 8
#11 Si Senora – 20-1 – Sneaky Turf breeding. Had trouble in only turf start
$10 Win and place 11

Pimlico – Race 9
#6 Indian Rodeo – 10-1 – Takes big drop in class and has best pace figs. Slop only question
$10 win 6

Tampa Bay -Race 7
#8 Mr Sluggo – 12-1 – This is one of my favorite angles and has produced some nice returns. Horse racing 2nd time at tampa who showed speed in first race and now stretches out. For some reason, horses need a race on the tampa surface and typically improve 2nd out. He showed speed in a sprint last time before fading. Now he stretches out and is the only speed in the race and should control it up front. He comes out of tougher races at gulfstream where he was bet. He was also bet in his last at tampa.

$20 win and place 8
**********Result – Off board
Off Odds – 10-1
Race Conditions – 8K NW3L
Re-cap – Sluggo was hammered early in the wagering and was bet down to 3-1, but by post time he was at 10-1. Jockey let a longshot set the pace while he rated in 2nd. He made a premature move when challenged by the eventual winner and tired badly in the stretch
Lessons Learned – Wasn’t a huge fan of the ride he got but he could be one to watch next time with the presence of the inside money.
Stable Notes – Took inside money. Needs race with lack of pace going long.
Tampa Bay – Race 8

#4 – All the Bases – 8-1 – With the scratch of the 7 horse tide table, he becomes the only speed horse in the race. Typically race set up is not the ideal play on turf races but I’m thinking this could be a wire job. The race two back at same distance he set very fast fractions and faded and the horse he lost to was an absolute monster.
$20 win 4 – $2 exacta box 3-4-5
********Result – 1st
Off Odds – 11-1
Race Conditions – Open 16K
Re-Cap – Whitey was cursing the jockey when he sprinted clear by 6 while setting a very fast pace, but the horse kept on trucking and won by a widening 7 at the wire. One of the easiest wins ever and played out exactly as envisioned (minus the fast pace).
Lessons Learned – The only reason this even became a play was because of the late scratch of the other speed horse. It pays to check the late scratches and adjust if needed.
Stable Notes – Something tells me that the horse that Scratched – Tide Table – needs to go in the stable. Crafty trainer scratched horse with presence of other speedball. Consider next out if race lacks speed.

Finger Lakes – Race 2
#8 Ativa – 3-1 – Horse ship sup from Tampa and is only the speed in the race. Don’t see anyone beating this one at 4.5 furlongs
$20 win 8
***********Result – 1st
Off Odds – 7-5
Race Conditions – 4K NW3L
Re-Cap – Didn’t see the race but was glad he won
Lessons Learned – Tampa shippers are always dangerous. Lone speed, best pace figs, and class drop is a money angle.
Stable Notes

Gulfstream -Race 6
#1 Kitten’s Caregiver – 10-1 Didn’t like slop in last. Switches to preferred distance.
$10 Win 1
********Result – Off Board
Off Odds – 31-1
Race Conditions – 10K NW3L
Re-Cap – Race was taken off the turf when a thunderstorm rolled through. So, this should have been no play. My selection didn’t like slop before but actually race a decent race rallying for 4th.
Lessons Learned – Nothing you can do about act of nature
Stable Notes – Caught sloppy track in last two. Play in Sprint on dry track

Gulfstream Race 7
#7 Grand Reality – 8-1- Almost made this one a lock. Takes blinkers off and returns to turf, which is where he wanted to be all along. He faced some tough ones on turf at Kennland and Churchill in allowance races and now gets NW2L claimers. Son of Grand Slam bred for Turf. Not sure last 6 races were on turf. He is also switching to a trainer who does well on turf.
$25 Win and Place 7 – $2 Exbox 4-7-9
********Result – Off board (but hit exacta with other two selections) – Exacta paid $126
Off Odds – 3-1
Race Conditions – 20KNW2L
Re-Cap – Race was taken off turf so selection became lame duck. Selection didn’t like sloppy track.
Lessons Learned – Exacta box saved us on this one. There is a big difference between allowance and NW2L conditons. Winner faced much better in allowance races.
Stable Notes – Play back in next on turf. Odds should be generous with darkened form off effort in slop
No Influence – Rallied nice for 2nd. Comes out of key race before when losing to Bruce Alley. Bred for turf out of Pleasantly Perfect and AP Indy on dam side. Play on Turf.

Keeneland – Race 9 – Bluegrass
#6 – Sensational Slam – 10-1 – Last year Whitey called 20-1 pletcher trained Exhi a lock because he was the only speed in the race. And he won in wire to wire fashion. Whitey will see if history can repeat. Pletcher has another speed horse in here and there is not much pace in here today. A wire job is possible.
$20 win on 6 – $2 ex box 3-6-11
*****Result – Off Board
Off Odds – 10-1
Race Conditions – Stakes
Re-Cap – Horse never got lead as expected and was basically toast after that
Lessons Learned – The bluegrass continues to produce longshot after longshot. Anytime Lezcano is on a horse give 2nd thought about him getting to the lead. He is not a send jockey.
Stable Notes

Oaklawn – Race 1
#1 My Paige’s Jewel – 10-1 – Drops and stretches out. Love any horse dropping from MSW sprints to MCL routes. He showed speed in sprints so potential to wire a really bad field.
$15 Win and Place 1
*********Result – 1st
Off Odds – 3-1
Race Conditions – MCL 15K
Re-Cap – Horse set the pace as expected and battled back in the stretch when headed to prevail by a neck.
Lessons Learned – Extra credit to horses dropping from MSW to MCl and stretching out after showing good pace figs in sprints.
Stable Notes – Possible play back in next race as he was only one of two horses to win on the lead all day. The other was a chalk. Won on lead on closers track. Though met a very bad maiden field.

No Locks today boys but we will try and bring home some winners to re-coup some of last week’s losses.

We’re doing some exacta boxes too.

Value Plays

Tampa Bay -Race 7

#8 Mr Sluggo – 12-1 – This is one of my favorite angles and has produced some nice returns. Horse racing 2nd time at tampa who showed speed in first race and now stretches out. For some reason, horses need a race on the tampa surface and typically improve 2nd out. He showed speed in a sprint last time before fading. Now he stretches out and is the only speed in the race and should control it up front. He comes out of tougher races at gulfstream where he was bet. He was also bet in his last at tampa.

$20 win and place 8

Tampa Bay – Race 8

#4 – All the Bases – 8-1 – With the scratch of the 7 horse tide table, he becomes the only speed horse in the race. Typically race set up is not the ideal play on turf races but I’m thinking this could be a wire job. The race two back at same distance he set very fast fractions and faded and the horse he lost to was an absolute monster.

$20 win 4 – $2 exacta box 3-4-5

Finger Lakes – Race 2

#8 Ativa – 3-1 – Horse ship sup from Tampa and is only the speed in the race.  Don’t see anyone beating this one at 4.5 furlongs

$20 win 8

Gulfstream -Race 6

#1 Kitten’s Caregiver – 10-1 Didn’t like slop in last. Switches to preferred distance.

$10 Win 1

Gulfstream Race 7

#7 Grand Reality – 8-1-  Almost made this one a lock. Takes blinkers off and returns to turf, which is where he wanted to be all along. He faced some tough ones on turf at Kennland and Churchill in allowance races and now gets NW2L claimers. Son of Grand Slam bred for Turf. Not sure last 6 races were on turf. He is also switching to a trainer who does well on turf.

$25 Win and Place 7 – $2 Exbox 4-7-9
